Rallarvegen, Norway's famed cycling route, was built in the late 19th century for the Bergen Railway construction. Its narrow width and historic stone features, like century-old bridges and sturdy walls, reflect its enduring engineering and cultural significance. Maintained traditionally, it offers a unique journey through rugged landscapes and cultural landmarks, providing an authentic glimpse into its rich history.

How long is Rallarvegen

Rallarvegen spans a total of 82 kilometers, beginning its scenic journey from Haugastøl. It parallels the historic Bergen Railway, passing through Finse, Hallingskeid, and Myrdal, then meandering alongside the renowned Flåm Railway before concluding its route in Flåm.

While it is possible to cycle the route faster, a leisurely pace with frequent stops will make the journey both safer and more enjoyable. Be aware that strong winds and bad weather can make the trip more challenging and time-consuming than expected.

Choose the route that works best for you and your companions. Most people choose to start at Finse and cycle down to Flåm in one day (5-7 hours). If you want to cycle the entire Rallarvegen, start at Haugastøl. Many then choose to take a break at Finse.

Weather and clothing

The climate in the high mountains is harsh, and the weather changes quickly. You must be dressed for a mountain hike in cold and wet weather, even in the middle of summer. Often, snow still covers parts of the trail in July. Bring warm clothing and equipment as if you were climbing Galdhøpiggen, and especially focus on keeping your hands and feet dry and warm.

Packing Tips from Experienced Hikers:

  • Windproof and waterproof jacket and pants
  • Wool base layers, wool socks, and a wool or fleece sweater
  • Hat, gloves or cycling gloves, and a buff/scarf
  • Waterproof running shoes in case of a shower or if you need to push your bike through a snowy section
  • Remember bike helmets for everyone in your group, sunglasses, sunscreen, and blister plasters
  • Bring an extra change of clothes for when you arrive
  • Always check the weather and trail conditions before you set out.
  • Be prepared for long stretches of Rallarvegen without mobile coverage, and it will take time to get help if problems arise.

Bikes

Choosing a Bike:
Choose a bike suitable for rough terrain and ensure that the brakes and tires are in good condition. Racing bikes and other types with narrow wheels cannot be used. Be aware that there is very limited capacity for transporting private bikes on the train. Bike transport on the train should be pre-booked. Consider renting a bike from one of the rental companies in the area. This way, you are sure to get a bike in good condition that is suited to the conditions on Rallarvegen. We recommend bringing a repair kit for your bike.

Transporting Your Bike:
If you rent a bike, you don't have to worry about bike transport. You can pick up the bike at the starting point and return it in Flåm. If you use your own bike, you must purchase a separate ticket for the bike to take it on the train. This can be done through Vy by calling +47 815 00 888. Remember to book bike transport in advance, as there is limited space. You are responsible for loading and unloading your bike on the train.
