Pre-Christmas trip with Tyrittroll

With their bags full of Christmas decorations and gingerbread dough, the family - well known as Tyritroll on Instagram - took the trip to Halvorsenhytta in Vestmarka to experience real pre-Christmas magic. Would it be possible to go sledding now? How easy is it really to roast gingerbread on a fire? You can read how it went here

Departure

🚂It's a Friday in December and the grey shutter lies like a lid over the city. We drag our son and the neighbor boy with us down to Oslo S. On the 20-minute train ride, the tracks go out of the gray. At the bus stop we see the snowflakes falling, one by one they hit the hat. Slowly, the Christmas spirit settles into a layer of white.

Packing list

🌲The bags are fully loaded with gingerbread dough, Christmas decorations and porridge, and on the way up the steep slopes into the field, the bags try to pull us back again, as if they are refusing.  Maybe they are not ready for Christmas? We go one step at a time. Mons (6 years old) lies down with the neighbor boy, they eat snow. Straight from the buffet. "I'm tired mom" No wonder I say, "look, down there we started, by the green fields" now the landscape is white. The trees too. We see the fjord and the lights flashing down there. We just get there before it gets dark.Tømmerhytte i mørket med lyse i vinduene

This weekend we own this castle and we have the key in our pocket. The key that gives us access to log castles and cabins all over the country.

Halvorsenhytta

🏠There, among the snowy spruces, stands our Soria Moria. A log cabin with a fireplace, oven and board games. This weekend we own this castle and we have the key in our pocket. The key that gives us access to log castles and cabins all over the country. This weekend, Halvorsenhytta is our paradise. What we need to get into the Christmas spirit. Because like the bags, I've been a little reluctant this year, not feeling quite ready. Known that Christmas is actually quite repetitive. This year again, I've been thinking. The inside has been gray and tired, and the flu has been like a shutter over the soul in recent weeks. The Christmas glow has gone out, but up here I can breathe. I look over the shutter. I see far. I look all the way back to my own childhood. And what I remember more than the gifts is the play. Play outside. Playing out in the snow, and here it is! 300 meters of altitude up from the shutter, hidden like a hidden treasure.

Saturday

☕Saturday morning we start the day with a cup of cocoa with cream for the cabin roof. Outside is our playpen. "What are we going to play today?" "Snowball fight" the guys answer quickly. The snow is not huge. It's hard. Crust with a sprinkle of powdered sugar. Can you make anything with this snow? Both the bags and the soul are lighter than yesterday, most things can go when you get your breath back. We use a shovel and a grate to make blocks out of the snow, carefully stacking the blocks on top of each other. One by one, high above the Oslo Fjord, higher than the cocoa cream. It will be the children against the adults, we lose. The match gives cold necks and feet, it's time for the second cocoa of the day, which is both a prize and a consolation prize.

Now I'm ready. Ready for a Christmas with lots of ramping and playing. That's what I'm going to clear time for, that's what I'm going to say yes to. Play and time outside.

🔥We burn socks and marshmallows over the fireplace. Makes lumpy porridge and black gingerbread on a fire, luckily everything tastes better outside. The saffron buns that were supposed to be grilled as stick bread crumble and clump, but it smells like saffron. It smells like saffron and gingerbread. The cheeks are hot and cold at the same time. It crackles from the fire and crackles in the soul. Now I'm ready. Ready for a Christmas with lots of ramping and playing. That's what I'm going to clear time for, that's what I'm going to say yes to. Play and time outside.

🌟A little about Tyritroll:

We are a small Oslo-based adventure family, Ingrid (35), Ole (35), Mons (6) and the dog Ito (8). In 2021, we walked on foot from our apartment on the sawmills to the North Cape in 9 months. Since then, we've had tousled hair and moss between our toes. It's outside we belong, we thrive best there. In 2023, we will go on a new long trip, in the American wilderness. Feel free to follow us on @tyritroll or read about the trip in our book "Tyritroll, on foot from Oslo to the North Cape with a four-year-old"
